The quiz consists of five multiple choice questions with the answers explained in popups after the user has made their selection. Questions address possible misconceptions regarding Linked Data principles and Linked Open Data (LOD), as well as the role of the RDF data model, triple statements, and vocabularies within the Semantic Web.

This presentation explains the RDF data model, the use of URIs to identify resources, and other RDF "tools". BIBFRAME is discussed as one of many vocabularies and ontologies being used to describe relationships between resources on the Semantic Web. The wider concept of Linked Open Data (LOD) is introduced along the principles and practices that support it. The module's home page contains links to more materials.

BIBFRAME Training at the Library of Congress: Introduction to the Semantic Web and Linked Data https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/bibframe-training-at-the-library-of-congress-introduction-to-the-semantic-web-and-linked-data/ Fri, 19 May 2017 07:03:10 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/bibframe-training-at-the-library-of-congress-introduction-to-the-semantic-web-and-linked-data/ This resource was developed by the Library of Congress as one part of a pilot training project which tested the use of BIBFRAME for bibliographic description. The purpose of this module is to introduce the Semantic Web, Linked Data concepts, and some basic tools. Topics covered include the role of semantically linked data in creating useful web services and connecting datasets on the web. The limits of the current MARC based environment are contrasted with the promise of integrating data more fully with Semantic Web resources to enhance user services. This home page contains links to PowerPoint presentations, quizzes, and assignments.

It begins by introducing the basic principles of Linked Data and the advantages of adopting it. This is followed by a brief overview of how the RDF data model and its serializations work and suggestions on how to get started.

Ontologies and Data Models- Are They the Same? https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontologies-and-data-models-are-they-the-same-2/ Sun, 30 Oct 2016 05:39:55 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontologies-and-data-models-are-they-the-same-2/ This blog post from "Voyages of the Semantic Enterprise" discusses issues related to the title question, including a brief history of data modelling and how the RDF Data Model and the way it differs from the traditional relational model, mainly by allowing for much greater conceptual modelling.

An Uber-comparison of RDFa, Microdata and Microformats https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/an-uber-comparison-of-rdfa-microdata-and-microformats/ Sun, 17 Jul 2016 06:32:29 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/an-uber-comparison-of-rdfa-microdata-and-microformats/ This blog post discusses issues related to technical compatibility issues between the RDFa and Microdata formats. It provides an easy-to-read list of similarities and differences between RDFa, Microdata and Microformats. A simple table summarizing all features across each structured data syntax is listed, with a link to a brief explanation of the feature.

Before explaining SPARQL queries themselves, a brief discussion of Linked Data principles (RDF, Triples, HTTP URIs, Ontologies) is given. Sample data and queries used in video are available at http://learningsparql.com/misc/sparqlIn11Minutes.zip .

Semantic Web Languages and Standards https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/semantic-web-languages-and-standards/ Sat, 16 Jan 2016 13:43:29 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/semantic-web-languages-and-standards/ This lecture covers a lot of ground- from very basic to quite advanced. It begins by attempting to define the Semantic Web and explain its basic principles, which leads to a discussion of Linked Data and the principles which underpin it. The RDF data model is briefly described before moving on to how vocabularies are designed and reasoned over using RDF Schema and OWL.
