Understands that in contrast to OWL sub-class chains, hierarchies of SKOS concepts are designed not to form transitive chains automatically because this is not how humans think or organize information – Linked Data for Professional Education https://ld4pe.dublincore.org Learning resources tagged by competency Thu, 19 Nov 2020 14:45:03 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.9.16 Introducing SKOS https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/introducing-skos/ Fri, 05 May 2017 06:59:13 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/introducing-skos/ SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System) is a model for expressing knowledge organization systems in a machine-understandable way, within the framework of the Semantic Web. The SKOS Core Vocabulary is an RDF application. SKOS Core provides a model for expressing the basic structure and content of concept schemes, including thesauri, classification schemes, subject heading lists, taxonomies, terminologies, glossaries, and other types of controlled vocabulary. This article provides some examples for using SKOS and discusses the general principles of building such knowledge bases.

SKOS: Past, Present, Future – and a little bit of History, Architecture and Engineering https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/skos-past-present-future-and-a-little-bit-of-history-architecture-and-engineering/ Tue, 10 Nov 2015 05:13:00 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/skos-past-present-future-and-a-little-bit-of-history-architecture-and-engineering/ This lecture discusses SKOS as a common data model for sharing and linking knowledge organization systems via the Web. Many knowledge organization systems, such as thesauri, taxonomies, classification schemes and subject heading systems, share a similar structure, and are used in similar applications. SKOS captures much of this similarity and makes it explicit, enabling data and technology sharing across diverse applications. The SKOS data model provides a standard, low-cost migration path for porting existing knowledge organization systems to the Semantic Web. Also available as PDF:

Who Needs SKOS-XL? Maybe No One https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/who-needs-skos-xl-maybe-no-one/ Tue, 15 Sep 2015 02:33:10 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/who-needs-skos-xl-maybe-no-one/ This blog post from "Voyages of the Semantic Enterprise" discusses the following issues and invites feedback: The SKOS-XL extension to the W3Cs SKOS standard for vocabulary management adds flexibility in how you track concept names, but it adds complexity and potential confusion that are rarely, if ever, worth it. Without a doubt, these issues play a role in the fact that while the use and tool support for SKOS is growing, there are few if any tools for SKOS-XL or published SKOS-XL vocabularies. An even more important factor is the lack of compelling business value that would justify SKOS-XL complexity.

Introduction to SKOS – Simple Knowledge Organization System https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/introduction-to-skos-simple-knowledge-organization-system/ https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/introduction-to-skos-simple-knowledge-organization-system/#respond Thu, 13 Aug 2015 13:45:23 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/introduction-to-skos-simple-knowledge-organization-system/ These slides are from the PhD Course on the Semantic Web at Turin Polytechnic University. SKOS provides the missing link between the rigorous logical formalism of ontology languages and the chaotic, informal and weakly-structured world of Web-based collaboration tools, as exemplified by social tagging applications. These slides are sufficiently detailed to be valuable as an inspiration or jumping off point for developing a lesson plan or lecture.

SKOS in a Nutshell https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/skos-in-a-nutshell/ https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/skos-in-a-nutshell/#respond Thu, 13 Aug 2015 03:26:20 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/skos-in-a-nutshell/ Overview of SKOS, in which the presenter asserts that SKOS is not a competitor of RDF Schema or OWL but an application of RDF Schema and OWL. Covers broader and narrower relationships, mapping between schemes, specialized labels, and descriptive notes.
