Understands that resources are declared to be members (instances) of classes using the property rdf:type. – Linked Data for Professional Education https://ld4pe.dublincore.org Learning resources tagged by competency Thu, 19 Nov 2020 14:45:03 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.9.16 RDFS for Hierarchy and Subsumption https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdfs-for-hierarchy-and-subsumption/ Sun, 02 Apr 2017 06:55:49 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdfs-for-hierarchy-and-subsumption/ This PowerPoint presentation explains the role which concepts from thesauri and taxonomies play in Linked Data (especially as they relate to SKOS). It briefly discusses ontologies in general before moving on to RDF Schema. Examples are given of how to defines classes of resources and the relations that connect them using RDFS. Focuses on defining hierarchical relations in support of inference (i.e., formally stating that membership in a narrower class automatically implies membership in a broader class).

Linked Data Basics for Techies https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-data-basics-for-techies/ Thu, 29 Dec 2016 06:44:04 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-data-basics-for-techies/ This guide is intended to be a crash course for a techie/programmer who needs to learn the basics ASAP. It is not intended as an introduction for managers or policy makers. It is primarily aimed at people who are tasked with creating RDF and need information quickly. It is also useful to people who want to work with RDF data.

Expressing Dublin Core Metadata Using RDF https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/expressing-dublin-core-metadata-using-rdf/ Wed, 21 Dec 2016 06:43:13 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/expressing-dublin-core-metadata-using-rdf/ This document provides recommendations for expressing Dublin Core metadata using RDF, the Resource Description Framework. It describes how the features of the DCMI Abstract Model are represented using the RDF data model. It does not rely on any specific RDF syntax, though examples using RDF/XML are provided.

On Explicit Provenance Management in RDF/S Graphs https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/on-explicit-provenance-management-in-rdfs-graphs/ Sun, 17 Jan 2016 13:56:09 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/on-explicit-provenance-management-in-rdfs-graphs/ The notion of RDF Named Graphs has been proposed in order to assign provenance information to data described using RDF triples. This paper argues that named graphs alone cannot capture provenance information in the presence of RDF Schema reasoning and updates. In order to address this problem, the authors introduce the notion of RDF/S Graphsets, in which a graphset is associated with a set of RDF named graphs and contain the triples that are jointly owned by the named graphs that constitute the graphset. They formalize the notions of RDF named graphs and RDF/S graphsets and propose query and update languages that can be used to handle provenance information for RDF/S graphs taking into account RDF Schema semantics.

This lecture introduces RDF Schema and discusses its benefits as well as its constraints and limitations. This includes inference and semantics, entailments, comparisons to OWL (such as the handling of disjointedness), and serializing RDF in XML.

This lecture explores the different meaning of "ontology" and its context here: a way of encoding domain knowledge that allows for both representation and reasoning. Discusses categorization vs classification, hierarchies, classes and instances, and the graph structure of tagging systems.
